This 2003 Chevrolet Astro three-door base cargo van has 243,500 miles from three previous owners, all in the Bay Area. Clean Carfax, and recently passed smog inspection. I purchased it used from a dealership in June to haul books from a large estate and find that I am not using it often enough to justify the time spent moving and re-parking it all over the city. Could be a good fit for a contractor, plumber, painter, or other professional in need of a cargo van. I’ve had a new starter and new battery installed and a new key cut since my purchase in June. The van passed the pre-purchase inspection, and all major components are apparently in good working order. Full service (oil change, coolant, transmission fluid flush, air filter change) 500 miles ago. Clean engine, clean title, working A/C and heat, working radio, driver’s side and passenger seats. This is an older vehicle and could use someone who will drive it frequently and knows how to give it TLC. There have been intermittent issues with cold starts after leaving the van parked for extended periods on cold and rainy days, where the van will turn over but not start. I took it to an official dealer service center, and after reproducing the issue after many days of successful starts, they diagnosed the problem as buildup in the fuel injector that causes the fuel to come out as more of a spray, rather than an atomized mist, which sometimes prevents it from igniting properly when the engine is cold. An ongoing treatment is to spray carburetor cleaner into the choke when it won’t start (a free can of cleaner comes with the car) and a longer-term fix would be replacing the fuel injector, which costs about $220 for the part. There is no problem whatsoever with the fuel pump, engine, transmission, or other expensive bits. There is also a jerry-rigged fix to the driver’s side mirror, with a replacement mirror taped in place after the original was sideswiped when the van was parked. (Only the mirror was impacted.) It’s a workable solution, but not pretty. The driver’s side door was replaced by the dealer and the new door was set slightly too low, so it has to be lifted to close properly. There is also a long thin crack on the windshield that was treated with a windshield repair kit and will not spread or deepen, but is still visible and a cosmetic defect. Finally, someone spray-painted a graffiti tag on the side of the van. These cosmetic defects and the issue with fuel injector are taken into account in the low price for the van. The price also includes sales tax. Shoot me an email if you’d like to take a look!
